Cadaverous - Luguber

Cadaverous - Luguber

Review done by Bonno Zwaan

So, it took three years to finally get something new from Cadaverous. We’ve reviewed their first ever release ‘Design In Blood’ years ago and it was something interesting to listen to. The brutal death metal Cadaverous isn’t the straight-forward brutal death metal you know and love. This one has more of a melodic touch here and there.

Well, one thing has changed and that is that they changed their style to a lot more technical side than the previous sound they had. The sound is hugely improved to say the least. The overall sound has been a huge surprise for me. The production (that has been done by the guitarist of Korpse and mastermind behind Carnifloor) has certainly got a massive boost and that is what such an unique band like Cadaverous deserves.

One thing is for sure. You won’t be in for intermissions during ‘Luguber’. The sheer power is admirable. Not that you would expect that during brutal death metal but nowadays you can expect everything you don’t expect. Let’s say that Cadaverous gives us an old school example of brutal death metal mixed with newer and more modern technical aspects that makes this album just an great example of Dutch brutality.

Throughout the album you do hear more of the technical aspect of the brutal death metal style that Cadaverous has made. Yes, if you hear this for the first time, you will say that this is a technical death metal album instead of a brutal death metal album. For The Netherlands, this is a style you won’t hear often played in the Dutch metal scene. So ‘Luguber’ is a very nice record to review after hearing all different kinds of variations of Dutch death metal.

However the vocals do stand out from all of the brutality. I guess Vincent is quite a fan of Glen Benton. The vocal styles of both vocalists do match quite a few times. You could say that Cadaverous is the smaller brutal death metal version of Vital Remains.

The conclusion is that this album deserves more attention. The amazing production sound is just mind blowingly good. I hope that Cadaverous will tour next year throughout The Netherlands/Belgium and Germany because this music needs to be out there. The Netherlands used to be known for its brutal music but it is getting a bit less known for its brutalness. I believe that Cadaverous is one of the bands that could bring that status back to The Netherlands.
