Wrang - De Vaendrig

Wrang - De Vaendrig.jpg

If you are not familiar with the work of Wrang, you are living under a rock for the last few years. Wrang has been making a big name of themselves in the Dutch black metal scene since their demo in 2015. Wrang will release their second full length ‘De Vaendrig’ on June 3rd on tape/cd/vinyl through Dominance Of Darkness Records and Tour De Garde.

‘De Vaendrig’ doesn’t hide the fact that they are ready to show their ‘not fucking around’ style of black metal. Straight to the point with a unique Dutch twist to it. With that, I mean, is that Wrang (if you don’t know) sings in Dutch. They always have and (probably) always will. Just by listening to the musicianship, you hear a lot of pure class. The band members have been in and around the (black) metal scene in The Netherlands and you can absolutely hear it. ‘De Vaendrig’ oozes with class and musical filth.

The straight forward powerful Taake type of black metal will please the ears of many fans that will be oblivious to the ferocity that Wrang is presenting with ‘De Vaendrig’. There are moments during ‘De Vaendrig’ that are unique and intriguing. Like the orchestral Dutch choir during ‘De Vaendrig’ certainly makes you a bit more proud of the Dutch people. During ‘Voorwaarts, De Nacht Roept’ there is an unexpected but suiting interval of disgusting vocals by Galgenvot. Combine that with the groovy head-on black metal, you will gain a bit more love for how Galgenvot makes the Dutch language sound even more disgusting than it already is.

Production-wise, Wrang does take it a step up with ‘De Vaendrig’. The album sounds polished and wretched at the same time. Every instrument is clear and that does take some skills. The songs are not just a full blastfest but Wrang certainly knows how to keep things interesting. As I write this review, I have listened to ‘De Vaendrig’ for over 5 times. This album has such a high replay value it is insane. This will certainly end up in my collection one way or another.

Hailing from the caverns of the Dutch black metal capital (if I may say) Utrecht, Wrang conjures an absolute head on black metal record that will get a lot of attention. Their previous record ‘Domstad Swart Metal’ has been received very well and ‘De Vaendrig’ will surely top that. Wrang will not surprise by putting out something completely different but don’t change a winning team I guess. Wrang is doing what Wrang does best. Make a ferocious album the Wrang way.
