Discarded - Humility

Discarded, a new band from the administrative capital of The Netherlands. The heavy hitter started in 2024 and has teased us with the singles ‘Hollow’, ‘Humility’ and ‘Ashes’. The other 4 tracks were released on the 25th of July under the name ‘Humility’. The Hagenezen have presented the world with a devastating deathcore debut and are ready to be a standout in the (Dutch) deathcore scene.
What Discarded immediately presents us, is not your run of the mill deathcore zero’s and one’s but a finetuned brutality. Discarded doesn’t wait to impress you but immediately drops the heaviness upon thy after the Rome Total War-escque classical guitar intro. Yes, there are zero’s and one’s but carefully and professionally mixed into the whole composition. The two singles ‘Humility’ and ‘Ashes’ follow and those two have received positive criticism from the local deathcore scene. ‘By Mind Defined’ is the very first new song that we got from Discarded. If we are going to FFO-labels on this track, I would say that fans of Humanity’s Last Breath and fans of the whole thall genre will certainly get their fix during ‘By Mind Defined’.
The next track is the already released single ‘Hollow’ and this might be the most creative endeavor that Discarded is releasing upon us. Progressive thall-ish deathcore with clean (both male and female) vocals and the voracious raptor-like vocals from Sten (Deeproot). The male and female vocals have a very nice contrast to each other and were the vocals from Andy are more painful and the vocals from Dominique (guest vocalist) and more ethereal and remind me of the vocalist from the black metal band (Dolch). Follow that with said raptor-like vocals from Sten (Deeproot), this is the most unique track on the EP.
‘Scourge’ is the slowest track but also with the most Slaughter To Prevail inspired main guitar riff I’ve heard in a while. Mix that with a more of a doom style of songwriting, you will have a complex song which felt a bit of an outcast on the EP. Maybe ‘Scourge’ would’ve fitted better on a different spot on the EP but that could be just me. ‘Scourge’ does show the capability of the musicians which is already clear but the variety of genre bending musicianship is very visible during ‘Scourge’. Finishing off the record, ‘Paradise’ is being presented. ‘Paradise’ I could say is the wet dream of a thall style fan. Extremely heavy riffs and creative drum patterns and slow doom style straight from the get go. Mix that with angelic style vocals and you have an epic ending to an amazing release from ‘Discarded’.
What a debut. They came out of nowhere and dropped a thall/deathcore banger onto the scene. The 7-track EP ‘Humility’ is a fresh addition to the already insanely talented core-scene in The Netherlands and Discarded is a worthy addition. So basically, highly recommended if you are into the modern type of thall like deathcore.
