Ok, I am going in blind. Gorge of War is (for me) an unknown project from Amsterdam, The Netherlands. The one man project from the person called MVG which doesn’t ring a bell to me who it might be. In 2021, Gorge Of War released an EP called ‘Caverns Of Slime’. This is a great introduction to what Gorge Of War sounds like. Or I will just say that the project sounds like Angelcorpse, Archgoat and Sarcofago. That will work too.

 

The Netherlands doesn’t have many ‘war’ metal projects like Gorge Of War. They have a few but not very known. Gorge Of War should be able to change that. The sound that MVG is pursuing is gnarly to say the least. The low gurgling voice he presents fits the raw black metal very well. The overall sound MVG creates feels very uneasy but not unlistenable. The music still has a lot of groove in it. There even are melodic parts where you can ‘calm’ down but even during those moments, MVG creates an eerie atmosphere. 

 

I don’t know if MVG uses a drum machine but if he does, he has done a great job to make it sound natural. During the song ‘Judah Whorezone’, the ‘sing-a-long’ title track really comes out. You can actually yell along with what MVG has to say. That certainly doesn’t happen in every (war) black metal song. That is something to be proud of. ‘Judah Whorezone’ is my personal favorite song on ‘Black Webs and Angelsex’. 

 

Gorge of War has surprised me by not releasing a full on blast fest of a war metal album. The album feels genuinely interesting and has an enormous replay value to it. Hopefully one of the Dutch labels will pick up Gorge of War and release some tapes or cds (or maybe a cheeky vinyl). Such an interesting release and an enjoyable release to listen to.
