Review by: Kevin de Haas
I've always been a fan of heavy and murky sounding music. The production has to be good in my oppinion, but making the sound deliberately so that it drags you through the mud is a true art on it's own.
A sound wich The prophecy ov Sarin has shown to be more than able to deliver. Heavy bass, crunchy guitar and enough reverb and depth to make you feel like your exploring a vast cave.
The prophecy ov Sarin are a Dutch/Polish band counting six members, founded in 2018 by Jari Bron and Mike Verbeek. Now in 2020 they are releasing their debut EP 'Axiom' on Via Nocturna.
Their sound is best described as atmospheric blackened death metal mixed with avant-garde and surprisingly even some old school doom. I like the way they switch between black metal and some groove and breakdowns in their first song 'Deus ex machina'. Smooth transitions between these sections is key to a succesfull mix of the two and they nailed it.
'Submit' has some weird rythmes going on. A bit strange at first but they eventually turn out quit nice the more you listen to it. This classic doom vibe I was talking about also shines through nicely on this track. There is some fantastic doomy lead guitar going on halfway through the song wich gives the track a great atmosphere that really blends everything together quit well. This track also introduces us to the Female vocalist Matylda Lisiecka. To be honest a female vocalist on this type of music is not really my thing but I truly do understand what they are trying to do here and it's executed in an excellent way.
'Void' is the most doomy track of all. At a mid-range tempo the track really bites down on it's doomy nature and with the clean, almost mourning vocals filling the mid section, it somehow reminded me of Celtic frost. Good stuff!
Overall this band checks the right boxes for me. Their sound is truly unique wich makes it hard to place them any type of genre specificalIy. But if you are into bands such as Hooded menace, celtic frost and Necrovault and add a female vocalist, this is a band for you to check out. Definitely not flawless! But if they keep evolving and honing their style and music I'm sure we are going to hear alot more awesome stuff from The prophecy ov Sarin!
