Gnaw Their Tongues - Kapmeswonden En Haatliederen

So the amazing Maurice strikes again. Along with countless other projects, he gave his main project Gnaw Their Tongues a new album this year. The chaotic, noise project has been alive since 2004 and his first release came out in 2006. The now already 1-year old album has been on my to-review-list and now I’ve got the time to listen to ‘Kapmeswonden En Haatliederen’.
So, if you’re not too familiar with Gnaw Their Tongues, it is basically noise-horror-experimtental-raw black metal. Yea? Get it? Nah, me neither. You just have to listen to the music of Maurice, he only has like 52 releases under the name of Gnaw Their Tongues. Before seeing Gnaw Their Tongues live, I’ve had no idea how haunting that experience would’ve been. After the gig, I wanted nothing more then listen to more and more of Gnaw Their Tongues. Luckily, he has been releasing release after release after release. So there isn't a lack of releases being released.
First off, I absolutely love the gore artwork. Gnaw Their Tongues isn't really known for its artwork however, there are some artwork in his repertoire that are frankly quite disturbing. So this artwork really reflects the level of horror and gore you can expect from such an album. This isn’t the album where you pick out several songs you ‘like’ because ‘Kapmeswonden En Haatliederen’ and other previous work of Gnaw Their Tongues isn’t like that. You listen to the whole album. Or should I say, ‘TRY to listen to the whole album’.
What can you expect from such an album like ‘Kapmeswonden En Haatliederen’? The main thing is hateful controlled chaos. There are countless bands that keep on doing the same thing all over again and you might feel the same about Gnaw Their Tongues however, if you listen closely to the albums produced by Gnaw Their Tongues, you can hear the maturity kicking in throughout the 52 releases. It’s kind of a usual thing to say but maturity in the noise black metal scene is very present here. Gnaw Their Tongues might be one of the most unique projects I will ever hear and see.
Throughout the album you will encounter certain moments where you think the gates of hell have opened and the screams and devilish sounds are being heard. These moments are scary but really intriguing. What really stands out in this album are the drums. They feel dense, murky and deep. ‘Kapmeswonden En Haatliederen’ is very well mixed and produced.
Of course you have the classic black metal elements. They are there! So for the classic black metal fans there are moments where your black heart will be emptier even more. Accomply that with the filthy noise elements and then you will have the album that is called ‘Kapmeswonden En Haatliederen’.
